Tooth Extraction: Procedure and Aftercare

Tooth Extraction: Procedure and Aftercare

Dental extractions, also known as tooth removal, are the removal of a tooth from the dental patient’s jaw. There are many reasons why a dentist may recommend a tooth extraction. The most common include:

- Severe decay

- Impacted wisdom teeth

- Teeth that are too crowded

- Periodontal disease

- Preparing for orthodontic treatment

- Severely broken teeth

- Orthodontic treatment

- Unhealthy tooth

- Teeth that are significantly misaligned

Extraction Procedure

The first step in your tooth extraction is to discuss your concerns with your dental care team. They can explain your options for sedation, and answer your questions.

If your dental team performs a local anesthetic, then you won’t feel any pain during your dental extraction. The dentist extracts the tooth from the socket using a dental tool if it is a simple extraction. For a surgical extraction, the dentist makes a small incision on the gums to remove the tooth from its socket.

Tooth Extraction Aftercare

After your procedure, it’s normal to experience some bleeding. To control this, you should bite down on the gauze for at least 30 minutes. Do this until the bleeding stops.

Avoid eating anything hot during the first 24 hours after your extraction. You should also avoid alcohol, smoking, and drinking through a straw. These can dislodge the clot and delay the healing process.

If the pain becomes unbearable, you can take over-the-counter pain medicine prescribed by the dentist. You can also eat a popsicle or an ice cube. Both of these will help reduce any swelling. Following the instructions of the dentist can help with the healing process.

An extraction is an excellent option to get rid of the tooth pain caused by a infected or damaged tooth that cannot be repaired through other restorative services. An expert dentist can help you with the procedure and can also suggest dental procedures that can provide an artificial tooth.
